Elon Musk Declares Political Independence
Elon Musk has announced the creation of a new political group called the America Party. The move comes shortly after a very public split with former ally Donald Trump. Musk unveiled the news on his platform X, calling the party a new force to break away from the two-party dominance in the U.S.
No Presidential Bid, No Leader Yet
Although Musk made the announcement, he’s ineligible to run for U.S. president because he was born outside the country. He hasn’t named a party leader or shared whether the America Party has been officially registered with election authorities.
A Public Poll Sparked the Move
Musk first hinted at the idea during a heated feud with Trump. At that time, he posted a poll on X, asking users if they supported the creation of a new party. The majority agreed.
In Saturday’s post, Musk said:
“By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it! Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”
He criticized the current political system, saying it lacked real democratic function and was riddled with corruption and waste.
Fallout with Trump Triggered Shift
Musk had been one of Trump’s closest supporters. He appeared at rallies, donated $250 million to Trump’s campaign, and even brought his young son to meet Trump in the White House.
After Trump’s re-election, Musk was appointed to lead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a task force meant to find major budget cuts.
The relationship soured in May, when Musk resigned from the administration. He then criticized Trump’s massive tax and spending bill, which was recently passed despite its projected $3 trillion impact on the federal deficit.
Trump Hits Elon Musk Back Hard
Trump responded sharply, especially targeting Tesla.
“Without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and head back home to South Africa,” Trump posted on Truth Social.
He hinted that DOGE would review federal support for Musk’s businesses, including Tesla, SpaceX, and Starlink.
New Party Faces Tough Road Ahead
The America Party now enters a political landscape dominated by two major parties. Historically, third-party movements have struggled to gain traction at the national level.
Recent elections saw alternative candidates from the Libertarian, Green, and People’s Party fail to make a significant impact.
Still, Musk’s influence and massive following could give this new party an edge, especially in an era of rising dissatisfaction with mainstream politics.
