Trump Optimistic Meet Amid Ongoing War
US President Donald Trump Optimistic about Gaza ceasefire negotiations on Monday. He hosted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington, DC, and described the talks as “going along very well.”
However, Palestinian officials told the BBC that the indirect discussions between Israel and Hamas in Qatar have yielded no progress. Talks are set to resume Tuesday.
Trump Optimistic Conflicting Accounts from Negotiators
A Palestinian official familiar with the talks said there had been “not even an inch” of progress after three rounds of negotiations since Sunday.
“The Israeli delegation simply came to listen,” the source said. “They have no real mandate to negotiate.”
Another Palestinian source accused Israel of “fostering a false sense of optimism.” Despite media reports claiming a breakthrough, the official called them “delusional” and “misleading.”
Relocation Plans Spark Global Criticism
During dinner with Netanyahu, Trump discussed proposals to permanently relocate Palestinians from Gaza. Trump said he had support from neighboring countries. Netanyahu added, “If people want to stay, they can stay, but if they want to leave, they should be able to leave.”
The UN and Arab leaders condemned the idea. Human rights groups also called the plan a violation of international law, equating it to ethnic cleansing.
Israel Signals No Statehood for Palestinians
Netanyahu ruled out Palestinian statehood.
“Israel will always keep security control over the Gaza Strip,” he said. “If it’s not a full state, we don’t care.”
Most UN member states support a two-state solution. Around 75% officially recognize the State of Palestine.
Military Actions Continue
Israel’s defense minister announced plans to move 2 million Palestinians into a southern Gaza camp, following security screenings. An Israeli human rights lawyer called the plan “a crime against humanity.”
Meanwhile, the IDF confirmed five soldiers were killed in Beit Hanoun by a roadside bomb. Hamas claimed responsibility and said its fighters struck the Israeli military in the same area.
Trump Optimistic Ceasefire Deal Details Emerge
The current US-backed truce proposal includes a 60-day ceasefire. Hamas would release 10 living hostages and the bodies of 18 more in five phases. In return, Israel would free Palestinian prisoners and pull back from some areas of Gaza.
Israel now controls about two-thirds of the strip.
Nobel Prize Nomination Adds to Political Drama
Netanyahu presented Trump with a letter nominating him for the Nobel Peace Prize.
“He’s forging peace as we speak,” Netanyahu said.
Trump has long sought the award. The nomination follows recent US-brokered ceasefires, including one between Israel and Iran after joint strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.
Hope for Wider Peace in the Region
A US meeting with Iran is expected in the coming days. Trump said he’s open to lifting sanctions on the Islamic Republic in the future.
Despite no breakthrough yet, officials believe the recent 12-day war could create a window for broader peace in Gaza.
